In a country where there is a widespread prevalence of firearms among citizens, fear of the increased risk of the Coronavirus has resulted in an increase in Americans' appetite for weapons.
According to a US arms supplier, "ammo.com," the profits of orders to buy weapons during the month of February increased by 309% compared to the same month last year, which the company described as "unprecedented".
"I'm trying to buy ammunition because of everything that is going on around the virus. It is horrific and I don't want to take any risks," one of the clients told ABC's local channel.
The number of people infected with the virus in the United States has exceeded 35,000, while more than 450 people have died as a result of the epidemic so far.
Reduced security presence due to corona
Americans are increasingly concerned with police departments in various states resorting to reducing their work capacities due to the spread of the virus so that the response is limited to the necessary appeals only and has even dealt with each other over the phone without going to the person seeking help.
Virginia police said the number of newly registered firearms jumped 86% in January, compared to the same month in 2019.
The index continued to rise during February, when 64,000 new weapons were registered, compared to 39,000 in the same month last year.
The Colorado State Bureau of Investigation announced that the number of transfers of firearms had doubled in the past week compared to the same period in 2019.
And the Americans are still lining up in large numbers in front of arms and ammunition stores.
"I have not seen such queues within five years of managing this place," said Malik of one of those stores in Pennsylvania. He added: "They constitute a mixture of those who come to buy weapons for their expertise and those who come to buy for fear of the security situation."
