With the new Coronavirus circulating around the world, various sectors around the world began trying to fight it in various ways, the most recent of which was an organization that began training dogs to detect smells.
And the British charity "Medical Examination Dogs" organization started testing a number of dogs to see if they could detect a person's infection with the Coronavirus by smelling it.
The organization has trained dogs to discover the smell of malaria, cancer, and Parkinson's in the past successfully, according to the BBC website.
Specialized police dogs will be tested to see if they can detect the Coronavirus, by performing tests in cooperation with Durham University.
The head of the organization, Claire Gist, said they are in the testing phase for dogs to be able to identify the smell of the virus in a safe manner, and stressed, "In principle, we are sure that the dogs will be able to recognize the smell of the Covid-19 virus."
If this is proven, dogs can be used to screen anyone, including those who have no symptoms.
"It will be fast, effective and non-surgical, and it will allow the costly resources of the Ministry of Health to be used in the necessary places, while the dogs will be used in other places," said Dr. Gest.
The head of the Department of Disease Control in Britain, Professor James Logan, said that previous research showed that dogs can detect the smell of malaria infection at a level of accuracy "higher than the WHO diagnostic criteria".
The medical examination dogs organization said that each disease has its own unique aroma, according to the BBC website.
The organization added that the dogs could be ready within 6 weeks to help provide a "quick diagnosis".
Professor Steve Lindsay, of the University of Durham's Department of Biological Sciences, said detection dogs at airports could be used to quickly identify people with the virus.
"This will help prevent the disease from reappearing after we put the current epidemic under control," he said.
