Us President Donald Trump warned Tuesday that a general shutdown in the United States that is beginning to cause an economic crisis could "destroy" the country.
"We could destroy a country if we close it like this," Trump told Fox News, adding that next week he will reassess the implications of the 15-day shutdown.
The president said a "significant contraction" could outnumber the new Coronavirus in the United States, and hoped economic activity would resume rapidly.
"We could lose a certain number of people because of the flu." But we could lose more if we plunge the country into a major recession," he said, noting that there could be "thousands of suicides."
