Japan recognizes for the first time that the postponement of the 2020 Olympics may become inevitable

Abe stressed that "cancellation is not an option", thus confirming the position of the International Olympic Committee Sunday, which admitted for the first time that it was considering postponing, not canceling the Olympic Games, to take its decision within 4 weeks.

It is the first time that a senior Japanese official has made official statements about the possibility of postponing the games originally scheduled in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9, to a later date.

Postponement calls gained momentum in the past two days, and moved from athletes individually to federations from several countries, under the pretext of the outbreak of the "Covid-19" epidemic that claimed more than 13,000 people, and imposed extensive restrictions on movement and travel around the world affecting the athletes' preparations.

These calls came in light of the almost complete paralysis imposed by the virus on the world of sports, and the postponement of important dates scheduled in the summer, most notably the European Cup and the Copa America South American football.

Canada and Australia refrain from sending their players

Canada has officially announced that it will not send its athletes to participate in the Summer Olympic Games scheduled in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9 due to the emerging Coronavirus.

For his part, the head of the Australian delegation to the Tokyo Olympics announced that "it is clear that the Games cannot be held in July 2020". "The Australian Olympic Committee trusts that its athletes now need to prioritize their own health and the health of those around them and ensure their return to their families," the Australian Olympic Committee said in a statement.

The Australian committee added that it held a meeting on Monday morning and agreed unanimously that it is not possible to form a mission in such circumstances.
