The European Union of Football Association (UEFA) said in a statement today, Tuesday, that it has decided to suspend all club and men's competitions for men and women "until further notice," which means stopping the Champions League and European League matches, and the European Championship was postponed.
"The matches of the Euro 2020 qualifying supplement and the international friendly matches scheduled at the end of March will now take place during the international period in the beginning of June, after reviewing the developments of the situation," UEFA said.
The Federation suggested in a statement that the tournament hosted by 12 cities across the continent be held between June 11 and July 11, 2021, instead of the date originally scheduled between June 12 and July 12, 2020, explaining that this postponement would allow the European national championships to complete the season, after the competitions were suspended against the background "Covid-19" Outbreak.
This is the first time in the competition's history that the championship finals have been postponed.
Before the announcement, the tournament was already on the horizon as two hotels told Reuters earlier in the day that UEFA had canceled room reservations in Copenhagen, one of the host cities for the tournament that would take place from June 12 to July 12.
The CPH Hotel in Copenhagen told Reuters by phone that UEFA had booked 80 out of 102 hotel rooms, but had canceled the room reservations just over a week ago.
The Marinelist Strandhotel, which usually hosts the Danish national team, also told Reuters in an email that UEFA had canceled the Danish team's reserved rooms.
The decision to postpone the tournament, which will be held with the participation of 24 teams, is thus following in the footsteps of many sporting events and competitions around the world because of Corona. The Copa America was also postponed.
